Primally Wounded Or Not?

A fellow adoptee, Simon Benn, and I had a conversation recently about the impact Nancy Verrier’s book, Primal Wound, had on us. It was recorded as one of his regular podcasts and I’d though I would share it here.

It was a wide ranging conversation that started with our views of the book and went from there. I’ve written about Primal Wound before and I probably need to re-read it, because it is clearly a spinal text for the adoptee community.

Simon and I have a very different narrative about the impact our adoption has had on us, although I think perhaps we have more in common than we realise. He signposted the difference in the podcast title, Primally Wounded or Fundamentally Unwoundable?, which although a little clunky as a title, actually summarises our individual narratives pretty well.

What Simon and I also have in common is a desire to take our professional experiences and skills and apply them for the benefit (hopefully) of adoptees. I am still working out how to do that. Meanwhile Simon has been prolific. He has built a business around the idea of Thriving Adoptees, and his website is packed with podcasts, video casts and much more. He has strong views, most of which are quite different to mine, but he’s on the pitch and cracking on, so fair play.

Our conversation takes about 50 minutes and I’d be interested to hear what you make of it.
