Ending Extreme Poverty

I found out about the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) and their Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative (UPGI) via this Ted Talk.

Shameran Abed, son of the founder of BRAC, offers a really clear and engaging insight into an example of big changes I talk about in my model. What I enjoyed was the way in which a massive, seemingly unresolvable problem, was being tackled from the bottom up in a really down to earth way.  It’s only 11 minutes long, but doesn’t suffer from excessive hype like some TED Talks can.

But what has this got to do with saving the planet? In project Drawdown  one of the less likely solutions being suggested is Educating Girls, which actually ranked #7 in the Drawdown top 100 solutions (ranked by their impact on reversing global warming).

And how can you get involved?Well the easiest and most obvious way is just by sharing their stories. It helps us all to know that work like this is going on.You could subscribe to BRAC’s newsletter, which I find an inspiring read, and share stories via social media. You could make a donation to them; why not find out more about them on their website?
